September 11, 2009
US-based First Solar recently has signed an agreement with the Ordos municipal government, whereby First Solar will build a new solar power plant in Inner Mongolia, China, with support from the latter, with an aim to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, Bloomberg reported on September 9. First Solar stated that the new facility - which is cable of generating 2,000 megawatt of electricity, enough to supply three million Chinese households - is projected to begin construction by 2019. Prior to the 2,000 megawatt solar installation, First Solar will begin a 30-megawatt demonstration unit, which is slated for construction in June 2010 and follow-up phases to be announced in 2014 and 2019. Financial terms of the deal, however, have not yet been reached.
